Recycling of Program Property

The Space Shuttle Program Transition and Retirement (T&R) team was responsible for the disposition of a large amount of personal property located at NASA Centers and contractor facilities. A large percentage of this property was transferred to other NASA programs, NASA centers, and other federal organizations, or sold to outside entities; and some material was sold as scrap. The T&R team also had to manage the disposition of property that was not immediately identified as having the potential for recycling, including x-ray film, paper, items containing lead, and property with the potential to contain small amounts of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs). The T&R team put extra effort into identifying recycling opportunities for this property, resulting in cost savings and/or savings on disposal costs, and supporting the Agency’s overall sustainability efforts.
